Windows 11 16bit image files do not display correctly as Windows 11 wallpapers

Recently came across this issue where 16bit images (.TIF), if set as desktop backgrounds, are displayed significantly brighter than they should. If the same image is converted to an 8bit (.TIF or .JPEG) then the image is displayed correctly. It is probably worth noting that image viewing programs (such as Windows Photo Viewer, and third-party) do not incorrectly display the image regardless of color bit-depth.The first image is the correctly displayed 8bit, the second is the overly brightened (somewhat desaturated) 16bit.
