Windows 10 3D builder - Crystals

Nastyrasher

When i split an object in 3d builder i get something which i can only describe as 'crystals'. From then on it is nearly impossible to repair the model. Any ideas why this should happen and how to stop it? This particular piece has been repairing for 8 hours
