Windows 10 'Access denied' suddenly when trying to access external hard drive (WD Passport 2tb on Win 10)

Hello, I would really appreciate anyone's help.


I suddenly can't access my files on my WD passport drive. I'm getting a 'Access denied' error when double-clicking the drive.


I know there are tons of discussions and help-threads out there re this problem. But none of them are working for me that's why I'm writing this.


Here's what happened:

• It was working fine on my win 10 with internet
• I unplugged it and plugged into a win 8.1 without internet connection (don't know if this matters?)
• Then plugged it into my win 10 machine and it then read me the error message 'Access denied' and I.... I...

I looked up the issue:

• I did try and go to the security tab, but all users and admin were already allowed full access. I can't really change anything for any better in those options.
• I tried the sharing tab as well allowing all access to all users but still access denied.
• I ran scans and got back that everything is ok! Which is good, I suppose?

I really don't want to waste hours of work, having to format the drive and then fill it up again with backups etc. Also I see in some forums that some people have experienced fixing this issue but then some time later experiencing it again!? I'm thinking maybe returning this brand to get my money back and perhaps trying another one? It seems very unsafe.
