After falling victim to a scam with my Microsoft account, I created a new email account and wanted to hide the original from view. I removed this original email address from my Microsoft profile only to later discover, with horror, that it wasn't receiving emails. I can access the account via the new email address but that's it, the original account no longer exists. I received no warnings from Microsoft, no "Are you sure you want to remove 'this' because 'this' will happen.' I'm now quietly fuming.
