Windows 10 After years of flawless use Phone Link suddenly stops working :(

I have been using phone link to connect to an Android Galaxy phone for years with no issues. In June 2024 phone link stopped working - now when I click on the phone link icon that I have pinned to my taskbar it hangs - I just see the startup logo and ~25% of my CPU is consumed by the application. I have read suggestions on the internet on how to reset and reinstall phone link and have had no success, except I was able to find a painful workaround: in a windows powershell command window I remove phone link using "Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.YourPhone -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage", and then from
