I started to decrypt an external hard drive that I got from Seagate with my recovered files on it. Too late they contacted me and said that they didn't recommend my decrypting it but if I started it I needed to let it finish. They told me that I had to turn to MS to get support if I used it.
They told me all of this too late as I had already started the process.
Now, the process is stuck at 24.1% finished and it hasn't moved in 24 hours. There aren't more than 450 GB on the drive if even that. It says I can pause it to remove it, so the files are not damaged but pushed pause does NOTHING at all.
In other words, nothing changes. It doesn't say it's paused or not.
My PC has been on for over 48 hours because I am scared I'm going to lose or damage the drive if I try and remove it. I don't know what to do.
I can't keep my pc on for days and days.
I usually shut it down at night as it's in my bedroom and I need it quiet to sleep.
So my questions are:
Would putting my pc to sleep stop the process, or would it keep going?
If it stops it, will that damage it?
What can I do to make it finish running this decryption?
Why does clicking pause do nothing?
Would ejecting it via the software ejection damage the files and make them unreadable?
I tried to copy and paste the files into another backup drive but it kept giving me an error that the device didn't exist. It copied the folders but they were all empty. Yet when I look in the folders on the drive, everything is fine in them.
When I click on Manage Bitlocker, all it does is show me the drive being decrypted but there is no stop or roll back or anything.
I really don't want to lose this data and I regret ever starting this decryption. Lesson learned.
Someone please respond and help me.
Thank you.
