This is a followup response to an earlier query now closed; "Windows 7 hates my HP LaserJet 1200", in hopes that it will help others who have not yet resolved this situation:
For a LAN with a Win 7 workstation trying to access a HP 1200 printer connected via a parallel port cable to a Win XP workstation, the following modification of McNeal's initial response worked for me:
From the Win 7 workstation:
1. Control Panel ---> Devices and Printers
2. Add a printer
3. Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer ...wait for a few minutes and more ...a list of available /shared printers should be listed
4. Note the Address of the printer you want; e.g. \\FIN-PC\hp laser 1200 --->press Cancel
5. Repeat step 2.
6. Add a local printer
7. Create a new port ---> Select 'Local Port' --->next
8. Port name ---> type address of printer you want from step 4. --->OK
9. Install printer driver --->Select(Windows Update)
10. Select 'HP" --->select model of printer shown in step 4 --->next
11. Wait for several minutes or more. The printer should be installed --->Print a test page to verify --->Finish.
