Computer locked up with warning on bottom of screen and ask me to call a number

Computer locked up with warning on bottom of screen - "Call XXXXXXX" When my wife called she connected to a company representing itself as A2Z Solutions and Xpert Solutions of California. Thinking they were a vendor for Microsoft my wife gave them permission and $ to fix our PC. Has anyone had prior experience with this company. They loaded a copy of Webroot and took care of any other apparent problems. Have we been Hacked?
