These messages were from the default automated / scheduled update process:
After attempting the USB/ISO update path (Method 1 from Install Windows 10 version 20H2 manually - Your Windows Guide), the process hung at "90% complete" for over 3 hours, forcing a hard reboot. This resulted in the following message at restart::
Processor: Intel Core i5, 661 @ 3.33GHz
RAM: 4.0 GB (3.74 GB usable)
54 GB free (of 111 GB) on OS/boot drive
In Safe mode, the OS build appears as 18362.19h1_release.190318-1202
After failure of the USB/ISO attempt, I forgot to disable the WSUS service, so the default update process started one more, during which I (again) had to hard-boot the PC after watching it hang at "60%" for over 2 hours.
The folder named C:\Windows\Panther exists, but there is NO folder named C:\Windows\Rollback
The folder C:\Windows\Panther\NewOS exists, and contains ONLY 2 folders, named Panther and RollBack
The SerupAcct.* logs at the root of Panther are from my initial Windows 10 installation a year ago, and not relevant to this update issue.
ChkDsk C: /F completed without any errors
