First, I must admit that I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers but I know enough to follow the steps. I will go over a few very important points before I explain exactly what happened.
1. I had Deep Freeze by Faronics with which I had created a virtual partition (T.
2. I originally bought the computer with windows 7 professional and then took advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade Microsoft was offering at the time. It's given me problems since I installed it and even at one point completely stopped working. It would not start at all and it would just give me a black screen. I had to call Windows and with their help I was able to reinstall it. They said it was probably due to an update so we just turned off all updates. I've had it like that since. One of the issues I've had with it for a long time is that it would refuse to shut down from windows and so I had to just force it to shut down. Even with this and a few other issues I have kept Windows 10 since and then I installed Deep Freeze and created the partition.
So here's the story. The computer had been giving me this issue where if I turned off the monitor for a while, it would make the monitor go into energy saving mode and it seemed like the PC would go to sleep. I would turn on the monitor, move the mouse and press some keys on the keyboard and nothing. It would still be off. I read online it could either be the video card , the motherboard button battery or the monitor cable. I highly doubt it was any of those but I thought, hey, what can happen if I just unplug the monitor and plug it back in right? so I did that a few times. If I disconnected it, it would just say "no input detected, going into energy saving mode in 5 minutes" or something like that and when I connected it back in it would say nothing. I tried a few things and shutting the computer off and back on. Finally it turned on. I thought great! but then the windows loading screen showed and it looked different. Suddenly it said "Windows 7 professional". Then I see a window in the corner that said "restoring" or something like that so I go "no!!" and shut it off. I turn it back on and its still windows 7. Someone told me it might be that my computer is too dirty and some components were having trouble to start, so I cleaned it (yes it was insanely dirty, 5 years without opening it). I noticed then that some of my files from my hard drive (C were there but NONE of the programs. Deep Freeze was gone and with it my virtual partition. I tried to start windows 10 again (when I would open msconfig it would show boot as Windows 10) by fixing the starter files using a USB of my Windows 10 which I created with the help of Microsoft that one time windows stopped working but it didn't work. It would just give me some error. I called Microsoft, they charged me $49 but then they said I had to bring the computer to them and that it would be even more money so I just requested a refund.
Here's the thing, I don't really care about the (C Files, I don't really care about the programs, I will buy them again if I have to, I don't even care if I have to stay with windows 7 professional for now. The only thing I really care about is that virtual partition (T. I would save all my important files there which included a thesis my wife has been working on for over a year, and other documents that helped her with that thesis. All of those documents are crucial to us and we never thought that partition would disappear. (Now we know better). I purchased a program called Ontrack EasyRecovery since I read that it was one of the most thorough when searching for and recovering partitions and files. I even got the pro version. It did not find the partition. I just downloaded Minitool Partition Wizard and the first search did not find it (currently doing a more thorough scan but it doesn't look very promising). Do you guys have ANY suggestions on how to recover these files? I honestly do not know what else to do. It's as if these files and that partition never existed on the hard drive. It's as if there was no footprint at all, nothing. Please help?
