Hello,

I have Asus N71JQ laptop, i7-720QM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD5730, 4Gb, two HDD 500 GB Seagate ST9500420AS and running Windows 7 64bit.

I started getting the following error

EventID 11 The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk#\DR#

when I click on safe remove or unplug external HDD or USB stick. The error was automatically generated in system log. I checked Harddisk# (number) and it always refers on external HDDs or usb stick but not on internal ones.

Error is:

There are so many and I posted some just in case. I'm not sure if these differences are significant.

The error first occurred when I was backing up my data onto WD My Book 1Tb hard disk every time when I clicked on safe remove. After a while same error occurs when backing up onto WD Elements 2Tb which I bought couple weeks ago. Same error occurs even when using WD Passport 3 years old and from yesterday when using usb stick. This rules out cable problem because each HDD has its own. Even if I replace cable problem still persists.

I run chkdsk on all external HDD and no problems/bad sectors were reported. Even Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics did not report any problem (test pass) after quick test and extended test as well. BTW, no problems with two internal Seagate HDD.

I am aware that there are several posts saying that this problem could be ... In almost all cases, these messages are being posted due to hardware problems with either the controller or, more likely, a device that is attached to the controller in question. The hardware problems can be associated with poor cabling, incorrect termination or transfer rate settings, lazy or slow device responses to relinquish the SCSI bus, a faulty device, or, in very rare cases, a poorly written device driver.

In addition, there are posts about error 11 but they are not helpful in my case. I tried to update IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, and it says it is up to date. Sometimes there is only one log in event viewer and sometimes three in a row with same ID 11 error.

It might be worthy to mention that sometimes I notice that the error message Id 11 is preceded by warning Event ID 225 Kernel-PnP:

The application System with process id 4 stopped the removal or ejection for the device USB\Vid_1058&Pid_10b8\57583231453534554C303031.

Additionlly, I’m not sure if it is relevant but new WD Elements HDD started to produce click sound when it is unplugged. Furthermore, I am not sure but almost at the same time when I connect external HDD to usb port, the usb mouse stops working for several seconds (~10sec) while touchpad works well.

Thanks in advance
