I have an HP Pavilion G6 laptop with a very bizarre set of symptoms. When I upgraded to Windows 10 several months ago, I immediately started experiencing the following problems about every 59 seconds (sometimes a few seconds more, sometimes a few seconds less; I have repeatedly timed it).
These actions occur about every minute. However, if you right-click on the Windows box in the lower left corner and select “Control Panel”, the Control Panel will briefly open, immediately close and then the system immediately launches into the above actions no matter how long it has been since the “refresh”.
To trouble-shoot the problem I have done the following:

I have tried to troubleshoot this from time to time for several months but have been unable to locate the source of the problem. It was originally just an annoyance but it is really starting to get to be a problem. I have considered reimaging the OS, but I would really rather avoid that hassle. Also, my original operating system was not Windows 10 and I am not sure I could get the free upgrade now. Any suggestions either for what could be causing this or how I could figure out what is causing this?

- If File explorer is open, it closes, even if it was in the middle of performing an operation. It does not reopen.
- The application icons on the desktop disappear and then reappear.
- The application icons at the bottom of the screen in the tray disappear and then reappear.
- If the Start menu is open, it closes. It does not reopen.
- If an application (like Word) is open, the application does not close but you cannot continue to enter text until you have clicked the cursor in the application again.
- Sometimes after this occurs, you can click on icons (including the Windows box) on the screen and nothing activates until the next time the screen clears.

To trouble-shoot the problem I have done the following:
·
- I disconnected all external devices: monitors, backup drives, keyboards, etc. The problem still occurred.
- I rebooted into Safe Mode (Minimal) without Networking. The problem still occurs.
- I have opened Task Manager and watched while this occurs. In Safe mode, the only background processes that are running are: Application Frame Host, COM Surrogate, Cortana, CTF Loader, Microsoft Help and Support, Runtime Broker, Windows Shell Experience Host and WMI Provider Host. When screen blanks out, it seems to occur when the Microsoft Help and Support process starts using CPU time, but sometimes it is other processes. In Normal mode, the process that seems to start using CPU time after the screen disappears is Host Process for Synchronization. I don’t know if these processes are related to the cause or just the response to the whatever is causing the problem.
