On July 11, 2024 my computer downloaded the latest updates. On the morning of July 12 when I rebooted my computer the hard disk began spinning at high speed and I got a blue screen that asked to input my Bit Locker code -- whatever that is. When I hit the Esc button to get out of it, the screen went black and the hard disk began whirring at full speed. This went on for hours and nothing I could do would stop the computer or get it to reboot. Extended presses of the start key would do nothing, for example, nor would any key combination I could find on the web. Here is how I solved the problem.
