Last week, I started receiving messages that the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) in Windows Media Center failed to update. My EPG listings ran out at 7pm three days later. Repeated attempts to update have all failed.
After extensive searching online, nothing has brought it back. Worse, since the "Local Channel Data" also fails to download, running Setup again and scanning for channels fails to detect four major networks: ABC, CBS & PBS. Scanning finds 107 OTA channels, but not those four networks, which and among the strongest signals in the area (another Tuner app finds all channels just fine.)
I have another TV Viewer app ("NextPVR") that scans all channels just fine, but the app is buggy and lacks features.
Things I've tried so far:
o Rescan Setup (Tasks | Settings | TV | TV Signal | Setup TV Signal) - this worked the first time, but when I noticed the aforementioned missing networks, I did it again. No Guide since.
o Disable/Re-enable the Media Player Service.
o Adding two specific IP addresses to the WMC "Hosts" file: "65.55.5.170 data.tvdownload.microsoft.com" & "128.177.98.169 cdn.epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com"
o Running "C:\Windows\ehome\mcupdate.exe" as Admin (icon appears in tray but never updates.)
o Tasks | Settings | General | Setup | Run Setup Again
Nothing works. I tried adding the missing channels manually, but that only works for stations ending in ".1", and if I don't know the exact frequency, it won't work. And with no EPG, I can't schedule any recordings.
The "Windows Feedback Center" page for WMC appears to have been discontinued as well. All posts lead to a "404 Not Found" error.
I'm beginning to think MS has discontinued all support for WMC (it hasn't been a part of Windows since Win7). I know it was not included with Win8 and discontinued with Win10 altogether, but did MS suddenly just decide to drop it for everyone without warning? Is anyone else still receiving EPG updates?
I have yet to find another TV app as complete as the tuner in WMC. I'd prefer to keep using it if possible.
My setup: 64bit Win7. USB tuner stick. Works fine with WMC. Been using it for years.
Help please!
PS: I tried the "solution" provided here and now Live TV in WMC does not work AT ALL. It tells me to rerun Tuner Setup but when I try, it reports it "cannot continue" due to "serious problems". Argh!
