Windows 7 How do I change song format on Windows Media Player?

I uploaded all my cds onto windows media player years ago and I uploaded all my music onto the app called Music Player which worked fine on my old phone but on my new phone the message "the song format is not supported" appears on nearly all my songs? Any ideas how to get around this? Thanks.
