Windows 10 I changed the number of cores in msconfig to 4 (my computer's maximum) but I don't see any performance increase, is there anything else I can do?

I need help with this cause my computer lags very much recently and I don't know why. I searched up for solutions on why my PC started to suddenly lag but the only tips were for me to defragment my disk, uninstall big programs and close unnecessary background applications. Those didn't help at all so I'm really trying to find something that works.
