Windows 10 I'm asked to activate my license every six months or so. After 3 years this is tiresome. Why does it keep happening?

So why does Microsoft keep asking me to activate when I've done so without incident 9 or 10 times already? Is it a windows update? Did several employees in Washington sleep through nightly backups? Or did I anger someone there who has me on a harassment list? Does Microsoft have any idea what a hassle it is to keep a log book with every computer with "name, ran, serial number" attached to it or in it? Did I buy the license from a thief? Can someone explain what I should do when contacting The Borg??
