Instead of taking action against virus, my virus protection software just says quick scan again

So, for a while, my virus protection software (I think it's windows defender? I dunno, my computer is a hand me down) has kept saying there is a virus and then I've done a quick scan and taken care of it. Annoying, but not a big deal. But today, when I figured out which file had the virus and tried to remove, a new one appared. Did the same thing, but now when it says take action, it doesn't, it just says to quick scan again. What should I do, if anything? PS, I'm not 100% sure what version of windows I have, I just know I update it when there is an update.Edit: My virus protection software I
