Windows 10 Issue with Epson RR-60 Scanner - "check the connection to the scanner and try again"

I'm not sure which end the issue I'm describing below is occurring on; whether it's Epson or Windows. Not finding answers on Epson, so figured it's worth a shot asking here. I have seen some others mention issues with Epson & Windows software, though not quite the same issue I'm experiencing.I have a Lenovo laptop running Windows 10 64bit. I need to clean my Epson RR-60 scanner due to lines appearing on my scans. I purchased the maintenance kit but when I open the scan utility and select the “cleaning” option as per Epson’s directions for feeding the cleaning sheet through, I get this mess
