I've been trying to use my 4K TV as a second display connected via HDMI to my PC but have been having some problems with it displaying properly.
If I try to extend the display, Windows will detect the TV and show it in the settings as working fine, but the TV will show a completely black screen. It's receiving input as there's no message from the TV saying it's not, and it will still output sound. Sometimes while fiddling with the settings it'll display for a moment, a brief flash of life, then blackness again.
If I try to duplicate the display, the image will be discoloured with blacks showing as fuzzy blue - as if there were a problem with the graphics card, screen or cable connection. Sometimes the image will flicker rapidly as well, other times there will be no discolouration but the flickering will persist. It also seems to output at only 30fps on this mode based on my mouse movement (it's a 120Hz panel with up to 60Hz input).
However if I leave the TV on for about 20 minutes and then switch between duplicate and extend modes, it'll work perfectly fine on extend display... that is until I try to use it again the next day. It will also start to display properly on duplicate mode, though it still seems to only update at 30fps on this mode no matter what. Extend outputs at 60fps as it should.
The TV works perfectly with my consoles: Wii U, Nintendo Switch and PS4 Pro. I've tried connecting the cable to multiple HDMI ports on the TV and graphics card but neither seem to make a difference. My consoles work perfectly fine in all ports on the TV so it's not the TV at fault, and the cable works fine with my consoles too so it's not that either. I only have this issue with my PC.
I currently have a GTX 980Ti (never overclocked) with an ASUS ROG 1440p 144Hz GSync monitor connected via DisplayPort as my main monitor and I've had no issues with these whatsoever. I'm connecting a Sony Bravia XE86 4K TV with a 10m HDMI 2.0b cable which supports up to 2160p 60Hz (which I am outputting) with HDR (which I am not using, as the option in the Windows settings refuses to switch on). Changing the refresh rate or resolution of the monitor or TV has no effect on this problem.
I've tried reinstalling my graphics driver, as well as removing the TV as a device and reinstalling it. My drivers are all up to date as is my version of Windows 10. I've tried setting the TV as my main display and only display which also just gives a black screen.
I haven't tried using a different HDMI cable as I don't have another one long enough to stretch across the room to my PC, but I have tested this cable with my consoles and it works perfectly with those.
Does anyone know if this is a problem with Windows 10 - as I've heard it's not good with multiple monitors - or if it's something I can solve as it'd make using the TV for some games more convenient.
Here are a few images of the issue on duplicate display mode which I hope might help. I'm using dark mode for Windows apps which is why the settings window is showing as fuzzy blue - it should be black. Everything displays as it should on my main monitor.
