Info. : PC: 2009 build, bought 8/2012: AIO; HP TouchSmart 420 PC , Running Win 7 Home Prem. 64 Bit. It's old, I realize that. I also learned too late that it has no Bluetooth capability nor an HDMI port.
I am out of C: Memory.
background: PC has been hit with virus' over the years which Norton IS missed. In 2015, when PC stopped functioning, just before Blue Screen of Death (I recognized the signals) , desperate for help after 2-3 at home Restores, I contacted HP tech support one day prior to the 3 year Extended Warranty expiration date. I'd called only one time prior for something minor. Tech was *insistent* upon performing another, tech support Restore via screen share, from her end, said her type of Restore would be more thorough "better than how customer perform Restore". I'd informed her that I'd *already* done restores and they weren't helping, that I was certain something was wrong with the PC and it was the reason I was contacting HP under the terms of my Warranty ! She was RELENTLESS, "We know what we are doing". Yeah, she sure did, bc , tho I allowed it , her Restore was useless. We talked a bit and that's when she informed me "It's your PC [no ****!!] Your model many have problems with bad motherboard". I advised that I'd never been contacted, not under the original Factory warranty nor during the paid for Extended Warranty, that I was still under warranty and HP must replace that motherboard. She refused because " We perform last Restore, you no longer eligible for free Motherboard" and said I need to pay HP $350 for new motherboard bc she did the Restore. this is my last HP PC.
Next, I "upgraded" (during free period )to Win 10 Home Premium. Compatible, I checked, it was a disaster (like so many others experienced because the OS , as usual ,was released too soon) .I also didn't want to pay MS for the DVD drive then to eliminate it only to be force to buy a new one. Restored back to Win 7 as it had been.
Questions: a. Windows Default programs why do they change every time I update the DSL Modem? 2. CyberLink- for Media - is it ok to use ? bc I have many Network issues ,forever stuck with Verizon DSL, between 2016-2017 they sent me 6 new modems until 1 of them was compatible "with the home office". Up to that point during 'inclement weather' I had either a functioning Landline OR Internet, not both. In Boston the weather is always inclement. More pathetic, Boston is not permitted to get Verizon FIOS- politics as usual in Beantown. Admitted by Verizon, the phone and internet issues were 100% on their end. But my constant requirement to update SSDI & WPA then again making it more privae by changing name and PW, apparently every single change affects how Windows Default Programs function. then Verizon sold Email to AOL and all the security info. had to change again- the Ports , the login info - everythting. I had to change my defaults again in Windows. Dealing with Verizon is a nightmare because they continue to *manage* DSL, but AOL owns and manages Email. So, w/regard to media software, CyberLink which I believe came pre-installed, is it ok to use as a Default for media or should I play it safe & default using Windows or HP ? It calls itself CyberLink and CyberLink PowerToGo and if I chose, controls all media DVD, CD, Video, Photos, camera etc. This PC was built with no Bluetooth (they told me it was) and no HDMI port (i knew that, made a bad decidion).
Bbad motherboard, no Bluetooth, no HDMI port- even though HP sold me along with this PC , a *compatible* AIO Printer that was built w/ Bluetooth, had Network capabilities, printing from internet, scan to PC, & came w/HDMI port . The Printer has never ever functioned as a network printer. It has never scanned to PC, I have never been able to use it via internet.
2. MS Office Home& business: Specifically Outlook Issues: In 2016 MS Office 2010, Outlook failed due to the "seamless" sale of Verizon's E-mail Division to AOL which Verizon really screwed up and AOL nearly destroyed 12 years of [MS OFFICE] Outlook files. I'm still fighting with Outlook files to operate properly under AOL (ex. now I have 4,475,220,634 emails in my Junk Folder) which I cannot empty because there is nothing there. However, other Outlook emails in different , misc. folders are visible but not Deletable because Outlook simply won't allow it. I contact AOL who advises to contact Verizon who advises only AOL can help who advises to Contact Microsoft whom I know will tell me to contact a different division than Windows and over there they will tell me to contact AOL or Verizon. I know this will be a lost cause. As again, there is no one, anywhere, who can help.
Another example of no one ever there to help consumers: June 9,2017 something got into my Quicken Folders; I could see them on my Crive I was unabel to access them, could not perform banking downloads, nothing. Even with MS Essentials (and Norton because Norton has failed me time and again) I thought I got hit by one of the ransomware hacks but never got "The Letter". I would only assume it was some Trojan virus (never reported by Security Essentials nor Norton- Malwarebytes found it in Feb. 2018) which took over my financial folders. It couldn't have happened at a worst time (other than April) during Intuit's sale of Quicken to Quicken which created another black hole of finger pointing between companies meaning that I ended up with no help from tech support or from any forums even tho I attempted to engage: Intuit, Quicken, Microsoft and Norton - all tech support pointed fingers at every other company and no one would help. I repaired my PC on my own thanks to the experience provided by 20 years of crashing PC's all 5-6 PC's sold to me by Microsoft. In the end it was w/some great help from knowledgeable folks at mybleepingcomputer.com I was able to restore 25 years of business and personal financial files. Which brings me to my next question(s):
3. External Hard Drives ; Cleaning out of C: Drive : How should I choose which Folders are safe to eliminate in effort to free up my C: Drive ? Having used the same Seagate external hard drive for at least 5 years, it's full w/ backups and system Image backups. Contrary to what Seagate promises, it does *not* replace old backups with current backups. Partly to blame is Norton/Symantec (but as key decision maker it is my responsibility to control all of you). In Dec. 2015 into Jan 2016 Norton Online Backup failed, I contacted Norton tech support (was this when Symantec was buying or selling Norton ? ) and stupidly allowed a first level tech support to take over my PC via ScreenShare. This bad move on my end forced an "escalate" to senior tech support and he was able to manipulate my Norton account and my PC so at least it was functioning. The errors taking place prior to his involvement required that we establish an entirely different Norton OLBA Account for me, then change my PC folders and PC name, copy the new folder from Norton onto my PC. Now I have old backups, new backups, Seagate created backups which I can no longer access bc Norton changed my PC name even as an Administrator I'm bnot the old Admin.
Now, Crive Full , D: Drive is inaccessible, Seagate External hard drive is full with so much info, half of which I'm not permitted by Seagate to access, I give up. I will start fresh in 2018 and buy new External Hard Drive.
I went to Staples with a simple question: Which is the best method to replace my current External Hard Drive Backup for under $200 so that I can free up my C: Drive. How do I chose which folders to move out of C: ?
Staples advised that the USB PNY on sale for $80 from $100 w/ 256 GB, USB 3.0 Turbo Attache 3 4K, would be plenty of memory to backup my C Drive. It didn't seem like enough memory to me, but hey, what do I know. Brought it home, popped it in and immediately tried to back up: Windows Errors: (a) Cannot use this method for Backup, choose another source (b) Cannot create System Image on a UBS drive. Tech should have advised - he knew 'exactly' what I was buying a new EXHD. A new Seagate would not have cost much more.
