Windows 10 Issues with Windows 10 file history backup

I decided recently to really clean up the horrendously disorganized state of my digital life because it's just driving me crazy and I can't take it anymore basically. Anyway, top of the list of things to establish is an effective and reliable system for backing up what I consider important files and if/whenever possible executables (programs). I've been reading up on best practices and it seems like the way to go according to most tech people is to use Windows 10's somewhat new File History feature for backing up the particular folders and files you want to make sure you don't lose should a crash happen. I have a 5TB Seagate External Hard Drive for this very purpose and the File History backup system used to work pretty smoothly but what I'm seeing as I follow the instructions for setting up regular File History backups has me extremely perplexed and I consider myself pretty above average when it comes to tech know-how. I'm no IT expert certainly but setting something simple like this up should not be something I beyond my technical abilities. Unfortunately it appears it is for some reason because when I go through the process (settings > update & security > backup) I see that option to "Automatically back up my files" is flipped on. When I look more closely by hitting "more options" however, I see the folders I want backed up, I see that the frequency is set to "Daily" and I see that the last successful backup took place on April 21st of this year -- over 4 months ago.....

I just have no idea of what to make of this. The size of the backup doesn't exceed my XHD's available storage or even come close. And when I opt for just getting a current backup taken care of now by clicking "Back up now" with the intention of figuring out why my backup schedule isn't being followed, the backup appears to begin but very soon will just stop....

There are no error messages to point to. There are no clues as to an explanation. It appears as though I'm just simply not able to use File History to back up select folders and haven't been for over 4 months.

If ANYONE has ANY EDUCATED IDEA about WHAT IS GOING ON HERE, please enlighten me because the lack of information about what the problem could possibly be is as frustrating as the problem itself. Thanks. Down with Windows....
