Windows 10 microphone not detecting my voice but it detects when a youtube video is playing?

I purchased a somic headset a while back and it plays audio great but i can not get the mic attached to it to pick up my voice.it only picks up sound from when a youtube video is playing. everything is enabled, i've tried messing around with sound settings and properties but it doesn't pick up my voice at all the microphone test only picks up sound from a video when it's playing
