I guess there was an update to Paint in one of the last few updates. I'm writing a book that is pretty paint-dependent and have run into a problem. For whatever reasons, when you erase something, it leaves a checker-board like surface beneath what you've erased. I did it on the map shown here. as an example. I uninstalled and reinstalled and it does the same thing. I don't see anything on a menu or a tool that refers to this. How do you fix it? It's never been like that. My wife's and my brother's do the same thing in Paint.
