Windows 11 Microsoft Photos not working in Windows 11

I have downloaded a number of jpg files onto my PC. This procedure has worked successfully in Windows 11 for months, but now I keep getting a message that the file format "may not be supported" (huh?) and I cannot view the photos. I have gone on to Settings and I cannot find Microsoft Photos there at all. When I tried to download Microsoft Photos (as it appeared to be missing) I was informed that I have the current version. Can someone please explain what is happening. This problem is only 2 days old and was not, I repeat, occurring previously.
