Last year, when I noticed a message in Windows Update that said...

Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004.
The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. Once it's ready for your device, you'll see the update available on this page.

I googled the message and learned that some devices may have compatibility problems with this update. Although it's apparently possible to force the update using Windows Update Assistant, Microsoft doesn't recommend it. So I just waited patiently, thinking that the update would eventually be tweaked to work with my device. I would check Windows Update, but the message would always be there.

Then today I received a new message in my notification area. It reads...

Your version of Windows 10 will reach end of service soon. Click to download a newer version of Windows 10 to stay supported.

When I click the message, it brings me to Windows Update. When I check for updates, I'm told "You're up to date". But the message that the May 2020 Update is "on its way" is still there.

For reference, according to Winver, my Windows 10 version is 1909. If it matters, my laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E531 6885 (model #PF0YX4L). It has an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3632QM CPU with 16 GB of RAM. My hard disk is 54% full, with 206 GB of free space. I don't have any extra hardware installed. My installed software is pretty minimal: Microsoft Office, OneDrive, a VPN, Adobe Acrobat Reader, a driver package for my Brother printer, the audio and other drivers that came with my laptop and a few Windows 10 apps (Spotify, etc.). Nothing unusual. With this one exception, I always keep my software up-to-date.

I'm not sure what to do. I'm worried that if I try to force the update through Windows Update Assistant that I will have compatibility problems. But I'm also worried that the May 2020 Update will never come and my version of Windows will become unsupported.

What to do?
