Windows XP No Sound after downloading drivers and reformatting computer.

I have a really big problem with my computer.
This computer used to belong to a friend of mine but she got a new one and
gave the old one to me. According to her and my cousin, they reformatted so
it would be as good as new.

Sure, the computer was all good except one thing was and still is missing.
No sound.
I searched all over the net for drivers, forums, error messages etc etc. Ran
through the sound troubleshooter-what feels like a million times which hasn't
helped me at all! I've got speakers but they still don't seem to work with
the computer, so I've figured out that it is some driver problem. Funny thing
is, my friend said that she originally did have sound.

After about five months later my dad went through the computer and said that
the computer was actually missing some files. He also did say that I
mentioned that my friend had her computers all linked up, my two computers
however are not. So he thought that maybe the computer was waiting for
something. Waiting for a signal from 'another computer'. I then though, 'ok,
I'll reformat it'. I put the stuff I wanted to keep on my 8GB USB and
reformatted it. While I was putting the stuff from my computer onto the USB
however, a message came up saying that my mp4 that was linked to my computer
had malfunctioned. No, it's not broken, my computer thinks it is but it still
charges and works perfectly fine.
Anyway-reformatted it-thought maybe sound will start playing...

.....No, I'm still getting the same THREE MIXED MESSAGES FROM THE COMPUTER!
And on top of that my mp4 has still 'malfunctioned' as well as my USB. My
USB works perfectly fine on the normal school computers! I've gone through
Windows Update-it says that there is nothing left for me to download. There
is no more security updates etc etc. What I did notice though that it
downloaded a PCI SoftV92 Speakerphone Modem. Not sure if it has any
connections to sound but thought I should mention it. I DO however have a
question/exclaimation mark on Multimedia Audio Controller-just like before I
reformatted the computer. It says that: 'The drivers for this device are not
installed. (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click
Reinstall Driver.' Did that but it says that the wizard can not find the
software. I've uninstalled it and reinstalled it but still nothing. My
computer keeps bugging me with a message 'found new hardware' if it isn't
installed which is starting to really annoy me. I do have Audio Codecs,
Legacy Audio Drivers, Media Control Devices, Standard Game Port, Unimodem
Half-Duplex Audio Device and Video Codecs installed and are working 'fine'
according to the computer. The computer does make those little 'beep' noisea
when I'm closing something off but it isn't coming from the speakers.

The mixed messages that I'm getting from the computer are:

From Windows Media Player 11: Windows Media Player cannot play the file
because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound
device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or
it might not be functioning properly.

From Sounds and Audio Properities:
Volume Tab: No Audio Device.
Audio Tab: Sound Playback: Default Device: Modem #0 Line Playback; Sound
Recording Default Device: Modem #0 Line
Record.
Voice Tab: Voice Playback: Modem #0 Line Playback; Voice Recording: Modem #0
Line
Record.

Advanced Volume Controls: No mixer available (a message comes up but that's
just the summary of it)

Sound Record: Another application is recording audio. Stop recording with
this other application and then try to record with Sound Recorder again.

This is all of the infomation that I have on my computer: (Got this BEFORE I
REFORMATTED THE COMPUTER-but it should still be very similar)

COMPUTER IDENTIFIED AS:

Machine: ASUS

Product Line: A7 SERIES

Product model still however unidentified.

(snip very long post that basically says no sound card drivers are
installed)

However, in this enormously lengthy post I don't see what sound *hardware*
you have. Perhaps I just missed it in the confusion. You say you have
searched for drivers. Not meaning to hurt your feelings, but I question that
you know what you were searching for.

General information about getting drivers:

Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html - Belarc Advisor
http://www.gtopala.com/ - System Information for Windows

If there is no sound card installed or you can't find drivers, assuming this
is a desktop computer simply purchase a new sound card and install it. A
basic sound card costs under $20.

On top of Malke's suggestions, after you get your sound fixed, you might
want to invest in some more memory. 256MB is going to be very limiting on
your system performance if you run much more then Notepad.

For the sound, check in BIOS that the on-board sound hasn't been disabled.
According to the spec sheet, that board has ADI1980 SoundMAX 6-channel
sound. Download the drivers and manual from here:
http://support.asus.com/download/download....SLanguage=en-us

On the right side selections, pick Motherboard, Socket478, P4SGX-MX, and
click on Search. When the OS prompt screen pops up, pick WinXP. All your
drivers, manuals, utilities, etc. will then be listed. Their site is so busy
right now (their message) that I can't get back in to see the selections,
but download the chipset and audio drivers, along with the manual (makes for
good reference reading as to where to hook up your speakers and other really
good stuff).

1. Identify the controller (maker's name and model number) and
get updated driver spftware from the maker's web site.
2. Instal this. If the Device Manager reports this device OK
continue as below.
3. If the yellow trouble flag persists, there is an electrical fault.
ASUS motherboards usually have "Sound on Board" (audio controller built
into the motherboard) so if this breaks down you must plug in a separate
audio card (circuit board) and first disable SoB in the BIOS Setup.

Audio problems can be complicated (involving hardware, software,
and external connections) so troubleshooting requires an authoritative
checklist of what to do and in what order. A good checklist appears
in PC Help Desk in a Book (Que pub.)

I'm guessing that you need a chipset driver from the motherboard or
computer manufacturer. Many of the peripherals that are built into most
modern motherboards won't be detected correctly by Windows until this
machine-specific driver is installed. You need to identify the exact
model number of the motherboard or computer and visit the
manufacturer's web site and search for the chipset driver, and any
other drivers specific to that model.

You might also check the BIOS settings to make sure the sound device
isn't disabled.

Think about what you wrote. Is a person who takes a freebie
hand-me-down computer gonna need more than 256MB?

Effing NO WAY.

Why not? I might be happy to take a free computer, and I'd probably be
unhappy with 256M. The two Effing things Effing have no Effing thing to
do with each Effing other.

You can also get a motherboard manual there. Section 2.4.3.1
on PDF page 53 shows the setting to enable the AC97 Audio.
It should be set to [Auto] rather than [Disabled}. Check
that before installing the driver.

Auto is the default setting.. highly unlikely that the OP would have changed
it..

But since it's a hand-me-down, the person the OP got it from may have. . .

If I were to hand you my motherboard right now, it is disabled :-)
It's worth a check.

My MB, too. The onboard sound seems a little too inconsistent on most MB's
I've had, so I've always gone with something else.

SC Tom

Thanks Mike and Paul, I did what you two told me to do but unfortantly it's
still not working!

I readed the manuel and checked out to see if it was disabled or not. It
says: AC97 Audio Controller - Able. Therefore I'm guessing that isn't the
actual problem.

I tried installing the driver-which actually IS a problem...
There are two install files from the download...I tried to install them
both. One file (from W2k_XP) doesn't work. I click on it, it asks if it
should let it run I click yes-nothing happens. I click it again-go through
the same process and nothing happens. I go over to the other one (from SE) I
click install and allow...a message pops up saying: 'Cannot Open Key' and it
keeps giving me these messages under the 'Cannot Open Key' part but every
message is slightly different from the last one and I can't get it off until
I restart the computer again. This the the 1st three messages I get from it-I
hope it helps!

'Cannot Open Key'
ENUM\ACPI\FIXEDBUTTON\2&DABA3FF&0

'Cannot Open Key'
ENUM\ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_X86_FAMILY_15_MODEL_21\_0

'Cannot Open Key'
ENUM\ACPI\PNP0000\471BF87COF&0

From then on ENUM\ACPI\PNP stays the same.
I hope those messages help!

Oh yeah and (sorry for double posting) but:

To Malke: Yes it is a desktop computer and I thought a basic sound card was
over $100!

To SC Tom/Nil: The memory itself hasn't be a problem so far. I have managed
to fit my entire hard drive on my 8GB USB and mind you...that was already
carrying files from my computer account at school (there is alot of them) and
a game that I got from my cousin. If there is any problem I have with it-it
is the Vitual Memory but the computer keeps telling me it is expanding it
(this was before I reformatted it, now I no longer get the message because I
have hardly anything on here). But well, like I did mention before-my
compputer won't read my USB anymore so everything is stuck on there for the
time being...*frowns*

To Bennett Marco: No offence or anything but it was either I take the
computer or my friend was going to put an axe through it. Seriously...she
said that she had one in a back shed (laughs). But like I mentioned above-the
memory isn't exactly a problem. So why expand it if I don't need it?

To Malke/Don Phillipson: I don't have any books or ANY CDs for the computer
AT ALL! We just loaded the computer into the car and drove back to my house
after giving it a good clean out at my cousin's (she was actually the one
that saved the computer from being axed). If I did have books or CDs on it I
would've read them already and probably have this solved by now....that's why
I have such a problem.

(oops the message went up there instead down here! My bad)

That sounds like a problem with permissions on the Enum key.

My immediate reaction, would be to log in as administrator, and
try to install the driver again. You probably won't break anything,
trying it that way.

If that doesn't work, perhaps someone else can help restoring
the permissions in the registry. I understand Microsoft has a
"Fixit" that uses the "secsetup.inf" to restore things to the
way they were when the OS was first installed, but if something
goes wrong there, you'll have more than just broken audio
to worry about.

The permissions I can see in regedit right now, on the
following key, are "Read - Allowed" for "Everyone" and
"Full Control - Allowed" and "Read - Allowed" for the SYSTEM
account. I presume that is how it is supposed to be, as I've
never had driver install problems.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum

I never said you should. In fact, I chided the person who did say you
should.

There is a good chance that the integrated sound card is a goner if the
drivers from Asus do not work.

However, there is something else you can try..

Go to Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device manager button..

Scroll down the list of devices until you reach the sound section.

Now uninstall all of the sound section, and then reboot your computer. It
should detect that there is no sound card and drivers, and attempt to
install whatever it can find. If drivers are not found, run the drivers from
the Asus web page for W2k/XP. You may just get lucky.

If this fails too, buy yourself a PCI soundcard and install it. You will
have to go into BIOS and disable onboard sound even though it may not be
working properly..

Good luck
