Windows 10 NumLock for alt codes?

I was trying to use alt codes for a certain project, specifically alt + 96. However, instead of getting the ` sign which I was supposed to get, nothing appeared on the screen. My method of using the alt code was:1. Hold the ALT2. Press the numbers 9 and then 6 in a sequence(not holding them)3. Let go of the ALTI then realized the method did not work, so I attempted to turn on NumLock, but cannot find a NumLock on my computer(Windows 10 laptop). I looked through settings to find NumLock, to the same result.How would I enable NumLock to use Alt Codes?
