Windows 10 NVMe SSD not detected

In two different PCIe slots, Device Manager shows 'Standard NVM Express Controller' as problematical in my non-UEFI x32Win10ProV22H2. Both adapter and SSD are new. Can I download a better controller to install ? - or how else to get the SSD recognised - I do NOT want to boot from it.
