Windows 11 PIN and log-in

I am so confused about PIN, password, & sign-in. I was able to change my PIN. I was able to sign in once and changed my PIN (picked a worse one). When I try to go back to PIN I can't type anything....Is PIN the same thing as signing in? I don't think so.
