Windows 7 Shared folders lost after SBS 2008 R2 backup. "A volume shadow copy service operation failed. Unknown error."

We have an old system, Small Business Server 2008 R2, that needed to be backed up before beginning a migration. We needed to run 2 backups. The initial backup appeared to be successful, or so it said, but a second one failed and this error appeared;

"A volume shadow copy service operation failed. Unknown error."

Now we have no backup and since then we have been unable to access shared folders. How do we recover the shared folders?
