I recently made the mistake of just plugging my Samsung S9 up to my laptop and transferring pictures and videos directly from my phone to an external hard drive. What I found out quickly is that you must use the Photos program and import them from the phone first. If you don't, they will be extremely large/ compressed and become corrupt. If you used the cut/paste mode then they are gone from your phone(not really though). I searched and found no help on this, except asking for a bunch of information and doing a bunch of steps with no follow-up. I did not give up and after an hour or so, I found a work around. Good news, yours pics are safe. Bad news, videos are not.
Go to your Samsung folder on your phone
Set it to show hidden system files
Go to My Files
Go to Internal Storage
Go to Pictures
Go to .thumbnails
Hopefully you will see all the pictures that are missing like I did. Again, I have not found videos yet.
You will have to have to select the photos and move them back to your Camera/DCIM folder.
I hope this helps some folks that made the same mistake I did of just cut/paste.
