Windows 11 Updating a BIOS update without plugging in the AC adapter.

Hi,I have my laptop updated last week but I didn't thought that it would be a BIOS update, so I didn't plug in the AC adapter... luckily the whole BIOS update process went well and my battery didn't run out, but my question is, why does the laptop need to connect to the AC adapter and what happen if I didn't plug in the AC adapter during the process. To be more clear, I didn't encounter any problem such as the battery run out or something, but the AC adapter is needed for the BIOS update?
