Windows 10 virus protection

my virus protection software just says quick scan again. my computer is a hand me down) has kept saying there is a virus and then I've done a quick scan and taken care of it. Today, when I figured out which file had the virus and tried to remove, a new one appeared. Did the same thing, but now when it says take action, it doesn't, it just says to quick scan again. What should I do, if anything?
