Windows 10 When I connect my laptop to my TV via HDMI I get an "Invalid Format" warning from the TV.

The core of the issue is that my laptop sets itself to "second display only" as soon as the HDMI cable is plugged in, meaning I can't change any settings with it connected. This connection works fine with my old laptop, which I retested after this problem started, and only occured after I adjusted the resolution from 1920x1080. I was trying out different resolutions with the connection as the edges of the screen were not visible by default. I returned the display to its original ratio and also tried 1280x720, which is the native resolution of my TV. Is there a way to force the display to the laptop screen with teh HDMI cable plugged in? I feel confident I would be able to resolve the issue from there.
