Windows 10 Why can't a user know why a PC has been highjacked, or for how long?

Our PC hard drive was active at nearly 100% for a long time. Why can’t a user be allowed to check their email when an update is underway (assuming that’s what it was)? Why can’t a user know why the PC has been highjacked, or for how long? Those are not rhetorical, and a response from MS management would seem appropriate. Task Manager provided little info on what the PC may’ve be doing, nor how much longer the PC was to remain unavailable. There was a quick flash about an "Edge update" on Task Manager. Really?
