Windows 11 why do i almost always have a yellow/black exclamation mark on windows security task bar, when i go in to virus and threat protection it says i need a

Why do I almost always have yellow/black exclamation mark ?when i go into Virus and threat protection, it says i need a quick scan, but when i start it, it never stops, just some red dots appearing to move from left to right. This goes on for hours (yes, I have waited that long).
