Windows 10 Why does my Aux Microphone only works as a headset

I have a microphone that plugs into the aux port on my laptop. My issue is that when I plug it into the aux port if I select "mic in" (on the "what device did you plug in" prompt) I am unable to get any input from the microphone at all, however if I select "headphones" then the mic works fine. This is a problem though because now windows also tries to output my audio through the microphone, so unless I have a headset on I now can not hear anything. I have tried rolling back drivers, restarting, and even upgrading to windows 11 from 10. Is there any fix to this issue?
