Windows 10 Why would file sharing with a direct ethernet connection (no router or switch) suddenly stop working?

Last night, I set up file sharing between two computers running Windows 10 using a direct Ethernet connection (just an Ethernet cable, not using a router or switch). Everything was working, but this morning file sharing stopped suddenly. I can ping both computers from each other, but I can't find them through Windows. the computers were not shut off overnight, so they were not restarted, but I did restart them during my troubleshooting efforts. The Windows Defender Firewalls on both computers are turned off.Any reasons why this would happen?Thanks for any help!
