Hello
I have an Acer Aspire V3-772. It came with Windows 8, was upgraded to 8.1 and then 10 over the course of its life.
I have had Windows 10 for several months now; my laptop underwent its most recent update 2 days ago (20/08/2016). As far as I remember, it had installed and applied the update as normal, although for some reason after it had finished, the screen was black and stayed that way with nothing noticeable happening. I left it for 10-20 minutes with no change or response from the computer, so I held the power button to turn it off (I know that's risky during Windows updates but I didn't know what else to do). After I turned the laptop back on, I am now faced with the Acer splash screen looping without it loading Windows... I fiddled about with one of the menus to see what I could find out, and I got the following:
"Recovery
Your PC/Device needs to be repaired
The boot configuration data file is missing some required information...
File: \BCD
Error Code: 0x0000034
You'll need to use recovery tools...."
Changing the boot order in the BIOS menu won't do anything - tried it already.
I am a complete lay person when it comes to computers, operating systems, terminology etc, so that's as much information as I can give.
What am I meant to do? Am I meant to use a disk/USB with Windows on there in order to repair my operating system? Since I don't want to wipe my computer (because I have files and photos), I won't use my Windows 8 disk. Should I try to get Windows 10 on a USB/disk? *If* I have to get Windows 10 on a disk, I have faced problems with that because the home desktop I typing on currently is naff and subsequently stops responding at the end of burning Windows 10 to disk so I end up with an incomplete Windows 10. If I try a USB, I used Microsoft's Windows USB download tool to aid me in putting Windows 10 on my USB stick, but this too has a problem because it could not make my USB bootable as it could not run "bootsect". The information page regarding this tool ( https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool ) says about bootsect: "In some cases, this tool needs to be downloaded from your Microsoft Store account. This may happen if you're trying to create a 64-bit bootable USB device from a 32-bit version of Windows" - my laptop is 64 bit and my desktop is 32 bit. Since I did not purchase Windows 10, I am unsure how I am meant to follow the page's advice to aquire the correct bootsect.exe through going to my recent purchases and selecting Windows 10.
Any advice? I would go back to Windows 8 if it wasn't for all my files being lost, but Windows 10 has been a cancer to my laptop ever since the update was forced upon me, but it's something I will unfortunately have to keep in the meantime.
