Hello. Running 32-bit Windows 10 Home version 20H2 on HP Pavilion dv9700t laptop. Attempting to install HP LaserJet 1100 (as substitute for Brother MFC printer having another Windows problem, which is subject of separate post). Printer has only parallel (IEEE-1284) cable, so USB cable with adapter between the two cables is installed; same configuration works and has worked fine on separate Dell laptop running Windows 10. First tried manually installing drivers on Pavilion via HP support site, but attempt was met with following message: "Windows can't install the HP LaserJet 1100 kernel-mode printer driver. To obtain a driver that is compatible with the version of Windows you are running, contact the manufacturer." (HP does not provide direct support contact for printers out of warranty.) Next downloaded and installed HP universal PCL6 driver from HP site. Problem is that Windows does not recognize printer even though connected via USB. Windows instead reports under Devices and Printers that IEEE-1284 Controller is installed and that driver is not available (although does not appear under Device Manager). Switched to another USB port and pop-up appeared stating that IEEE-1284 Controller was installed and ready for use, but still appears under Devices and Printers as having no driver available. Windows seems to perceive that a controller is attempting to be installed, when it is only a IEEE-1284 parallel cable that is connected to a USB cable with an adapter. In view of fact that printer functions normally on Dell laptop running Windows 10, it is more than odd that exact same connection configuration does not work on Pavilion. Well beyond frustrated and at wit's end after many hours. Please help. Thank you kindly.
