Dell M6600 with Win7 Pro originally installed from Dell. Was upgraded by MS to Win10 Pro about 3 years ago. Latest auto-upgrade from MS crashed the computer -- majority of *.exe files will not run now -- not even the windows ISO repair *.exe. Finally have concurred that Win 10 Pro is useless now and the update bricked the machine. Changed out HARD DRIVE AND STARTED FROM SCRATCH. Have original Win7 Pro disk and key from Dell. Loaded Win7 Pro OS and all needed software. Machine is back to running fast and reliably as original. HOWEVER: "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine" appears in lower right hand corner of desktop. No means of activation using the original key works. Only indication of error is a "Code: 0x80070002" message during Windows Activation.
Don't really care if the OS is activated or not as long as it works -- have all the receipts and proof of purchases for hardware and software required to establish ownership.
Will never be upgrading this Dell due to the importance of the software running on it and the incompatibility of the software with Win10 -- have turned "off" updates on OS.
Have spoken to MS telephone support -- no joy -- "Win7 is no longer supported", and "Key is valid for upgrade to Win10 Pro" -- Both of which do not solve the problem.
Question is can the OS run in the "not genuine" condition indefinitely?
