Windows 10 Windows Explorer crashes when opening a folder in a new window

I don't remember exactly when it started happening but for some reason I've recently run into the problem where Windows Explorer will crash (or at least freeze for a bit and then close all WE windows that are open) when right-clicking a folder and selecting "Open in new window". I'm not sure what causes it. At first I thought it might be a problem caused by my external drive but the same happens when opening a folder that's on my Dropbox or any other drive/cloud storage that it can find. It's really just an inconvenience but I would really like to know if someone knows why this is happening and if we could find a solution (unless MS solve it in an update of course).
