Windows 11 Windows Updates stuck at "pausing updates" and Security stuck at "getting protection info"

Tried attaching images but "something went wrong" with the website. Go figure.For months Defender has been stuck at "getting protection info" so I could never run a security scan. Been relying on third party apps like malwarebytes. I read that pausing windows updates and resuming them fixes this, but now for the last 2 weeks it's been stuck at pausing updates. I tried editing the registry recommended in a similar post with no luck. I couldn't get the pause to unstuck by deleting the pause files, because it hasn't completed pausing. Now I cannot get updates OR use windows security.
